NEED GUN HELP

Okay, I have gone to the gun stores (dick;s, gander mountain ect.) several times now, with a pocketful of FRN's, and every time I am leaving empty handed.

The problem is I don't know jack about guns. A few on here have suggested that I start with a .22, but I really want something a little stronger. I am tall and pretty muscular, 6'2 contractor, so a little .22 might not be much for me.

Anyway, I am looking to get a good quality rifle with scope, and a good quality reliable shotgun. One factor is price/availibity of bullets as I would like to get a good amount stored up.

I would like to be in the 350 to 500 range on the rifle and the shotgun.

Down the line, when I get my pistol permit, I am going to go with a g17 or a g19, so that area is covered for now, but I would like to get a couple reccomendations on a good rifle and shotgun that would be good to have around the house for protection.

Re: NEED GUN HELP

You need at least one 22. I like the Marlin 39a lever action.
For shotgun 870 pump 12 gauge.
For a rifle I would get a hunting rifle like a Ruger M77 in .30-06 with a nice leopold scope in your price range.

Re: NEED GUN HELP

Are you allowed to have semi-auto firearms (rifles) in your state of residence?

What type of neighborhood do you live in? Densely populated? .223 is better (safer) if your neighbors are close, etc....

Standard answer for effective, inexpensive shotgun: Mossberg or Remington 870 in 12 gauge.

Self-defense rifle: something in 223 or 7.62x39, maybe .308...Saigas in any of those calibers. SKS is another affordable option. Mini-14, AK-47, AR-15 for something more serious...

Scoped hunting rifle: Savage series bolt rifle in 270, .308, 30-06 offer a good value for your money.

Stick with common, more widely available calibers.

Several choices in the Glock, or Springfield XD, or Smith-Wesson, Ruger revolver in .357 Magnum are all useful if not so inexpensive...

Give us some more information on what YOU THINK you want.

Re: NEED GUN HELP

Everyone needs at least one good .22 rifle for SHTF. SHTF is not ONLY about self defense, it's about survival. It's probably much more likely that you will need a gun for hunting small game for food than for anything else. A good .22 rifle should be near the top of every survivalist's list of must have items.

Learning how to shoot with both a .22 rifle and pistol before moving on to larger calibers helps to develop good shooting habits. Starting out with too much gun can get you into a bad flinching habit. I would suggest a marlin .22 bolt action rifle and ruger Mark III .22 pistol to start.

Ok, well, and keep in mind I dont know anything about guns at all. Never ever thought of geting one until reading on this site.

I want a rifle with scope.
A shotgun that holds several rounds.
A glock
Cheaper, common rounds make sense
My price range ideally would be 350-500 each gun
I live in upstate NY, guns are very common
semi-automatic is allowed
I was looking at an m-15 at gandor mountain. was like 850 i believe
Was also looking at remington 700 at walmart - price 340 w/scope

I am a very careful consumer and would like to be informed before I make an important decision like this.

ps, the m15 looks very tempting....

Okay, do you mean AR-15? One of those would be fine--Colt, Bushmaster, Rock River, DPMS are some of the standard choices--there are more expensive ones. But ARs are a little more serious involvement..

Remington 700 rifles are my personal favorite...and have a reputation for fine out-of-the-box accuracy...AND have excellent RESALE VALUE which some people seem to forget.

Re: NEED GUN HELP

OK, here's what you need to buy. First get a Reminton 870 tactical. I saw them at Gander Mountain the other day for around 500 bones. They come with an OD Green barrel, thumbhole stock and a 3 1/2" chamber. The most powerful 12 gauge chamber you can get (although Remington isn't the only company that makes the 3 1/2" magnum).

Gander Mountain is usually the most expensive gun store in the country so you may want to shy way from them unless your only other choice is Dick's. Both suck by the way.

Next get a Ruger hawkeye in .30 caliber. 30-06, 308 or 300 Magnum are wonderful choices. Then pick up a Leupold or US made BUrris scope and you'll be happy.

For a pistol, get a S&W model 66 in 357 magnum. Then pick up a couple of glocks or other high quality autoloader. I'm not a fan of the 9mm but as long as you aren't shooting ball you'll be OK.

There are lots of little mom and pop gun shops around, but I figured the big box stores would be cheaper. I can always go to walmart too... I would love to support the little guys, as long at the prices are comperable...

Re: NEED GUN HELP

Keep it simple....most on this forum go crazy....if it goes "mad max" we are all doomed.

1) Get a simple 12 ga pump shotgun. I prefer Remington 870. Mossberg is also good...Remington is better. Just get their simple 12 ga field grade gun with the shortest barrel possible. 26 in maximum....might look at the ones they sell with rifle sights and are 20 inches long. Cost will be under $300 new. Sometimes they offer a combo set of rifled barrel + bird-shot barrel - this is a nice way to go....and keeps the cost down.

2) Don't bother with the rifle...just stick with the shotgun. You can easily shoot man size targets out to 100 yards with this gun. I've killed 220 lb deer at over 100 yards with the shotgun.

3) If you feel you must have a scoped rifle....you can get the rifled barrel for the shotgun that accepts a scope. Keep the scope to low magnification...in the 1X to 4.5X zoom range....these work great ...on 1X it has no magnification and a big field of view.....trist the ring on the scope and at 4X you can hit a small plate all day long at 100 yards....just like a rifle. You can still load the rifled barrel with buck-shot....lots of very deadly large pellets.

4) Get a simple, 2 in barrel 38 special or 357 revolver. Safe, simple, reliable, a woman can use it if needed. Charter Arms sells them new for under $300. Fits pocket - has enough power to kill - easy to use. SAFE.

5) Get a Ruger 10-22 .22 LR cal rifle....cost about $150.

That is all the guns you will ever need.

Buy a case of shotgun shells for bird hunting....number 6 shot if perfect = $100.

Buy at least 100 rounds of 12 slugs = under $100.

Buy a few hundred rounds for the pistol = $100

Buy 10 Bricks of 22 LR = 5000 rounds = a little over $100.

You will probably never use any of this in anger....but learn how to do so.

That is all you will ever need. Pretty much forget what everyone else here says.

Very good information, thanks for sharing. I think i am going to go shopping for a remington 870 and a good amount of ammo tomorrow. I will sleep a little better knowing i can protect my meager holdings....

What is your purpose in purchasing these firearms? You didn't say, and no one asked. If you are wanting to start hunting, my advice would be different than if you wanted these firearms for survival purposes. But, assuming both, it is hard to go wrong with a pump shotgun. There are many that are specifically made for defensive purposes. If you want to hunt, however, a Remington 870 would do the job. For the rifle, if you want to hunt, find a bolt action in .308. This is a military round and you could stock up on ammunition which would still be compatible with a battle rifle should you choose to get one in the future. If you are buying strictly for defense, get a battle rifle in the caliber of your choice, either .223 or .308. Search around for gunshows to check prices. Also, see if there are any shooting ranges in your area. Talk to the managers about competition shoots and show up then. Often, you can find used battle rifles in excellent condition in the $500 range at competition shoots.

Well, I am not a hunter, I am a vegetarian, but I would hunt/eat meat for survival if necessaty, obviously. I am looking for weapons to inflict maximum damage at various distances to anyone I deem likely to try to cause harm to me, my family, or my belongings. This is supposing that things take a turn for the worse in the future.

Hopefully they won't, but i shall be prepared if they do.

Re: NEED GUN HELP

Good advice from many people.

I think a remington 870 (or mossberg) and a ruger 10/22 (or marlin) would be a good start. If you have not shot handguns before, I would recommend throwing $300 at a ruger mark III or ruger mark III 22/45 to train with. The 22's are fun, and they won't break the bank when training with them.

Here is a nice little write up on an experiment titled, "Lethality of the 22LR- Results!":

A few years back I picked up a Winchester Ranger 12ga pump at a pawn shop for $150. It looks like new and has a smooth bore and rifle type sights. The barrel is around 20" long.

Excellent gun for defense and something similar would fit into your budget nicely.

Bushpilot 05-26-2008 09:34 PM

Re: NEED GUN HELP

Check the local pawn shops, my local one has Rem 870 3inch shotguns for $200-$350, bolt action rifles with scopes for $300 and up in various makes and calibers. Plus he's willing to deal, no one buying anything everyone trying to pawn. Cash talks, try to put a package deal together - ie rifle and shotgun for $550. Try to get one of the more common calibers like .308 or 30-06. Call around to some pawn shops further away, might be worth the drive.

Good Luck

That sounds like a battle rifle to me instead of a bolt action hunting rifle. There are many battle rifles to choose from. Search around in this forum as well as read some of the battle rifle postings in www.survivalblog.com Personally, I like the .308 over the .223 just because of the extra knockdown power. Also, I always thought that, battle rifle or not, the .308 round would be better to hunt with (it is). I like AR-10s, but you may find a model that you really like. Handle a bunch of them, and preferably shoot a couple, before buying.
